California Chrome Well After Awesome Victory

Tuesday, 4th October 2016

Trainer Art Sherman has reported that champion US galloper California Chrome pulled up in terrific order following his easy win in Saturday's Gr1 Awesome Again Stakes (9 furlongs) at Santa Anita Park. The 2014 US Horse of the Year scored by 2.75 lengths over Dortmund and Win The Space in the US$300,000 feature, although the margin would have been far greater had jockey Victor Espinoza not eased him down significantly over the final 75 metres. Undefeated in his six starts this year, California Chrome's record reads 15 wins from 24 starts for US$13,426,218 in earnings, making him the richest North American racehorse of all time ahead of 2008 Dubai World Cup winner Curlin with US$10,501,800. His next run will be the US$6 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita on 5 November. "He looked great this morning," Sherman told Blood Horse. "I went over him and he looks like a horse that didn't even run. The horse amazes me. We've just got to keep him healthy and fresh for the Breeders' Cup." He added: "It'll be the same kind of plan. We'll train him here at Los Al and bring him to Santa Anita a week out. I'm not going to change anything. It seemed to be a good plan, so we're not going to change it."
