Speedy Boarding Wins Gr1 Prix de l'Opera
At Chantilly in France, European champion 4-time Gr1-winning former Darley shuttler Shamardal (Giant's Causeway-Helsinki, by Machiavellian) celebrated an elite success when 4YO UK-bred mare Speedy Boarding (Shamardal-Dash to the Front, by Diktat) scored by 0.1 length for trainer James Fanshawe in the Gr1 Prix de l'Opera (10 furlongs), over fellow 4YO mare Pleascach (Teofilo-Toirneach, by Thunder Gulch) & 3YO filly So Mi Dar (Dubawi-Dar Re Mi, by Singspiel). Speedy Boarding improved her record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Prix Jean Romanet & Gr2 Prix Corrida) and 2 placings from 11 starts for £435,975 earnings. Speedy Boarding firmed for the Gr1 Champions Fillies and Mares race at Ascot on 15 October, but owner-breeder Mark Weinfeld said she would now head to the spelling paddock. "To win two Group 1s in a season is really quite something," he told Racing Post. "She's just improved and improved as the year's gone on. She'll retire now; the fillies' and mares' race [on Champions Day at Ascot] would probably come a bit too soon."
