Blue Blood Set For Debut

Wednesday, 5th October 2016

Regally-bred filly Orphea will debut at Avondale today, but only because she's in the opening event, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Lance Noble-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock, who will be ridden by Leith Innes, will have first use of the track in the NZ All Golds Maiden 3YO over 1100 metres. "She's in the first race so she'll probably take her chance," Noble said. "She ran well at the trials and she's a filly with a bit of ability and speed." Runner-up in her first trial in the autumn behind recent debut winner Veearma, Orphea was again second in an 800 metre heat at Avondale last month. Orphea holds a nomination for the Gr1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton on 12 November. "The season is moving on so we need to get her going, but the ground will be a query and we need to see how professional she is," said Noble, who is the private trainer to the filly's owners Brendan and Jo Lindsay. From the Peintre Celebre mare Midnight Ballet, Orphea is a full-sister to Gr1 Australian Guineas winner and Gr1 Rosehill Guineas runner-up Rock Classic and hails from the family of Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Midnight Fever (LuskinStar). This is also the family of Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond placegetter Startling Lass (herself a full sister to Midnight Fever), Caulfield Stakes, Turnbull Stakes and Brisbane Cup winner Igloo, as well as Gr3-placed stallion Dane Fever. Orphea was purchased by renowned bloodstock agent John Foote for $300,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Coolmore Stud.
