Sacred Elixir Thriving: Pike

Wednesday, 5th October 2016

Trainer Tony Pike says that top Kiwi 3YO Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi-Baltika, by Stravinsky) has thrived in the lead up to Saturday's Gr1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne. The son of English Derby winner Pour Moi was an excellent first-up winner of the Gr3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude 12 days ago and goes into Saturday's $1 million feature as the $6.50 second favourite behind Godolphin colt Impending ($4.40). "He's done well since the win and I'm very happy with him," Pike told racenet. "It was good to see him travel a bit closer to the speed and do it comfortably in the Prelude - he's a horse with a very good turn of foot and a strong finish, so it's a good combination to have." He added: "He's had a look at Caulfield and the extra 200m on Saturday will suit, although I wish it was 2000m. The Victoria Derby has always been his goal. He's from a dour New Zealand staying family and he will get better over further." A winner of the Gr1 JJ Atkins Stakes over the Guineas distance in Brisbane during the winter, Sacred Elixir's other spring targets are the Victoria Derby and potentially the Cox Plate.
