Bart Still Cox Plate Bound Despite Loss
Meanwhile, trainer Darren Weir concedes that Black Heart Bart will be racing for the minor end of the prize in the Cox Plate after he was comprehensively defeated by superstar mare Winx on the weekend. Black Heart Bart went into Saturday's Gr1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) in career best form having twice scored at Gr1 level this campaign in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Underwood Stakes (1800m), but the former West Australian-trained galloper was well and truly put in his place when beaten 2 lengths by Australia's reigning Horse of the Year. Even Weir admitted Black Heart Bart faces an almost impossible task of turning the tables on Winx in two weeks time. "He wasn't good enough but ran well. The winner was just miles too good," Weir told racing.com post race. When asked if Black Heart Bart would still progress to the Cox Plate given he will once again bump into Winx, Weir replied, "It's good money for placings." He added: "We won't be changing our plans, but obviously the winner was very impressive." The 96th running of the Gr1 WS Cox Plate (2040m) will be held at Moonee Valley in two weeks time (22 October).
