Lord Nelson Wins Gr1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes

At Santa Anita Park in the US, 4YO entire Lord Nelson (Pulpit-African Jade, by Seeking the Gold) made it three top-flight victories in a row when scoring by 2.5 lengths for trainer Bob Baffert in the in the US$300,000 Gr1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (6 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding All Run (Flower Alley-Proud Runner, by Proud Citizen) & 3YO colt Jazzy Times (Discreetly Mine-Jazzy Melissa, by Grand Slam). Owned by B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm, Lord Nelson improved his record to 7 wins (including the Gr1 Bing Crosby Stakes, Gr1 Triple Bend Stakes & Gr2 San Vicente Stakes) and 2 placings (including the Gr1 Malibu Stakes) from 13 starts for US$958,271 earnings. Trainer Bob Baffert is confident that Lord Nelson is right on target for the Breeders' Cup Sprint in three weeks time. "To win the (Breeders' Cup) Sprint, you have to be doing really well - be at the top of your game. The Sprint is a difficult race to win," Baffert told Blood Horse. "But if you have the right kind of horse, you can do it, and so far, Lord Nelson looks like the right kind of horse."
