Retirement Beckons Prince Of Penzance

Monday, 10th October 2016

Last year's Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance (Pentire-Royal Successor, by Mr. Prospector) is likely to be to be retired after fracturing his off-fore leg in Saturday's Gr2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield, reports racing.com. Despite the injury, the Darren Weir-trained galloper still managed to finish a brave fourth to Assign in the $400,000 staying feature. Prince Of Penzance will undergo surgery at the Ballarat Veterinary Practice today. “I would suggest that the overwhelming likelihood is that he’ll be retired,” part-owner Sandy McGregor said. “The soundness and happiness of the horse is paramount to us. By the time he recovers and is fit again he’s going to be eight-years-old so I highly doubt that he’ll race again.” McGregor added: “I reckon that he was probably going to peak this year and this season would have been his best but whether he would have been able to win the Cup again with 56.5 kilograms I doubt but we’ll never know now.”
