Freedman Happy With Cup Runners
Lee Freedman has provided an update on the progress of his two Caulfield Cup contenders just days out from the big race. The Hall of Fame trainer will saddle up new stable recruit Exospheric (known as Exosphere in the UK) and Our Ivanhowe in the $3 million Gr1 staying feature at Caulfield on Saturday. Formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute on behalf of Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, Exospheric (Beat Hollow-Bright and Clear, by Danehill) has won 4 of his 10 starts to date highlighted by the Gr2 Jockey Club Stakes (12 furlongs) at Newmarket earlier this season. The 4YO is coming an excellent Caulfield Cup trial when a close-up fifth behind top-class middle distance galloper Postponed in the Gr1 Juddmonte International (2100m) on 17 August, and Freedman says he is in top shape. "I am pleased with him. He's been eating well and he's very relaxed and happy," Freedman told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. "He worked over about 1400 metres with a lead horse of Cumani's [trainer Luca Cumani] this morning. They worked home nicely and ran home very sharply." He added: "I won't be doing much with him now. I think he is where we need him to be for Saturday. He is certainly fit enough." Meanwhile, Freedman is confident that Our Ivanhowe - who finished third in last year's Caulfield Cup behind Mongolian Khan - will also make his presence felt on Saturday. "I think he is in terrific form. His work down at the Peninsula this morning was fantastic. The team was really happy with him," he said. "He raced very well in this race last year, and to my eye he is a better horse this year." He added: "I think I have two very good horses in the race. One I know a lot about, one I know very little about, but one thing I do know is that they have the ability...and they will both run out a strong mile-and-a-half."
