Maher Confident Jameka Can Claim Cup

Friday, 14th October 2016

Ciaron Maher says top mare Jameka has had the perfect preparation for tomorrow's Gr1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). The 4YO daughter of Vinery stallion Myboycharlie is coming off a dominant win in the Gr3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) and a fast-finishing second to star Godolphin galloper Hartnell in the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m), which Maher believes has her at peak fitness for tomorrow's $3 million showpiece. "Normally when she races at 2000 metres or above she races up on the speed, so this race should be no different," Maher told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. "The way we have trained her is for her to peak for this race and the next one [the Melbourne Cup]. I think she has looked better every start and I think she will be better again than she was in the Turnbull." He added: "With that weight [52.5kg] and with the two runs over 2000 metres, she should be spot on for the mile-and-a-half. She is always very competitive in whatever field we put her in." Most mares struggle to make the transition from fillies grade to open company as 4YOs, but Maher says Jameka's impressive physical development is the key to her success. "She has just made the necessary steps," he said. "She was quite a forward two-year-old, and she was a big three-year-old who took on the boys, and now she has made that transition and let down into a lovely big mare. She has such a beautiful, free stride and carries herself so well...I think that is why she's able to do it." Jameka is the clear cut $3.50 favourite for the Caulfield Cup, with her nearest market rivals being fellow mare Real Love, and Godolphin raider Scottish, at $7.50.
