Almanzor Wins Gr1 Champion Stakes
On British Champions Day at Ascot in England on Saturday, 3YO colt Almanzor (Wootton Bassett-Darkova, by Maria's Mon) confirmed his champion status when scoring a brilliant 2 length win for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget in the £1.3 million Gr1 Champion Stakes (10 furlongs) for 3YO+, over 4YO mare Found (Galileo-Red Evie, by Intikhab) & 4YO entire Jack Hobbs (Halling-Swain's Gold, by Swain). Almanzor, already a winner of the French Derby and Irish Champion Stakes, improved his outstanding record to 8 wins and 1 placing from 10 starts for £2,280,784 earnings. Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget was full of praise for his stable star. "He's a champion," Rouget told Racing Post. "He did the same performance he did at Leopardstown and the time he had between the two races was perfect. He beat Found further because I think she had the Arc in her legs." Jockey Christophe Soumillon was equally glowing: "He's an amazing horse," he said. "Everything you do with him looks easy and he's shown how good he is. He was nearly unbeatable all year and he's getting smarter and smarter...He's a strong horse and his great thing is his turn of foot." Almanzor will now be sent to the paddock for a well deserved winter spell.
