First Seal Wins Gr2 Tristarc Stakes
At Caulfield in Melbourne on Saturday, Coolmore's Gr1-winning son of Danehill Fastnet Rock (Danehill-Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) added a Group success when 5YO mare First Seal (Fastnet Rock-Episode, by Scenic) scored by 0.2 length for trainer John Thompson in the $200,000 Gr2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) for 4YO+ mares, over 6YO mare Tycoon Tara (Written Tycoon-Mosstara, by Encores) & 4YO mare Pearls (Exceed and Excel-Accessories, by Singspiel). First Seal improved her record to 6 wins (including the Gr1 Flight Stakes, Gr2 Surround Stakes & Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes) and 6 placings (including the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes, Gr2 Millie Fox Stakes & Gr2 Light Fingers Stakes) from 17 starts for $1,221,060 earnings. Purchased for NZ$700,000 by the late legendary trainer Bart Cummings at the 2013 NZB Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Curraghmore Stud, First Seal races for a syndicate that includes the China Horse Club, Raffles Thoroughbred Racing and Think Big Stud. From the dual Oaks winner Episode, First Seal is a three-quarter sister to Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes winner Book Of Kells (Rock Of Gibraltar) and a half-sister to the stakes-placed Best Command (Court Command). Trainer John Thompson confirmed that First Seal would now head to the Gr1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on 29 October. "She's a lovely mare. She was the best horse in the race but just needed to handle Caulfield...she wobbled a little bit around the corner but class prevailed," Thompson told racing.com. "She has been aimed at the Myer and I think Flemington will suit her better. I'm looking forward to it."
