Derby Winner Coming Home

Thursday, 20th October 2016

New Zealand Derby winner Rangipo (Stryker Holloway Castle, by Zabeel) will return home after an unsuccessful Australian campaign, reports theinformant.co.nz. Crossing the Tasman after landing the Derby in March, the Tony Pike-trained 3YO finished ninth in the Gr3 Fred Best Classic in Brisbane during the winter, before venturing south where he was placed eleventh and tenth respectively in the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) and Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne. He will now be aimed at next month's Gr2 Tauranga Stakes over 1600 metres. "He was getting weighted out of all the races we wanted to target with him. We nominated him for the Sale Cup on Sunday, but he was going to have to carry a big top weight in that," Pike said. "So he'll come home and we'll run him in the Tauranga Stakes on November 12."
