Hasselhoof Sibling Wins Debut

Thursday, 20th October 2016

Maraini, a 3YO half-brother to talented Kiwi galloper Hasselhoof, lived up to his pre-race reputation with a soft debut victory at Matamata yesterday, reports NZ Racing Desk. The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained colt sat outside the leader to the turn before letting down with a nice turn of foot to score by 1.75 lengths in a 3YO maiden over 1200 metres. "He's got a lot of ability and he's obviously well-related," Forsman said. "We'll take him along quietly to give him more confidence. A better track will suit him even more as well." Purchased by Bruce Perry Bloodstock on behalf of owner Lib Petagna for $120,000 at the 2015 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Maraini is by former champion Australian sire Exceed And Excel from the Zabeel mare Alpine and hails from the family of Gr1 Ellerslie Sires' Produce Stakes winner Lord Ted and champion filly and New Zealand Oaks winner Star Belle. Apart from Gr2 Rich Hill Mile winner and Gr1 Livamol Classic placegetter Hasselhoof (Tavistock), Alpine is also the dam of Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner Vercors (Catbird). Hasselhoof hasn't raced since finishing third in the Gr1 Livamol Classic. His long-term aim is the Gr1 Auckland Cup on 11 March.
