Qewy Wins Gr3 Geelong Cup

Thursday, 20th October 2016

At Geelong racecourse in Melbourne yesterday, Darley's deceased shuttler & Gr1 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Machiavellian-Helen Street, by Troy) added a Group success when 7YO Irish-bred gelding Qewy (Street Cry-Princess Nada, by Barathea) scored a tough front-running 0.2 length win for trainer Charlie Appleby in the $300,000 Gr3 Geelong Cup (2400m) for 3YO+, over 5YO Irish-bred entire Grey Lion (Galileo-Grey Lilas, by Danehill) & 5YO UK-bred gelding and stable-mate Oceanographer (Sea The Stars-Que Puntual, by Contested Bid). This was the second stakes victory for Qewy who improved his record to 4 wins (including the Listed Heritage Stakes at Leopardstown) and 9 placings (including the Listed Silver Stakes) from 23 starts for $362,360 earnings. Godolphin will now be hoping that Qewy receives a sufficient weight penalty to force his way into the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, 1 November. "It's great for Sheikh Mohammed to have a winner here and its just brilliant for the whole team," said James Ferguson, stable representative for Godolphin. "That's the plan [to run in the Melbourne Cup]. If he goes up enough in weight and he gets in I'm pretty sure he will run."
