Barrier Key To Buffering

Friday, 21st October 2016

Trainer Rob Heathcote rates Buffering's inside barrier draw as the key to securing the veteran sprinter an eighth Gr1 victory in tonight's Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, reports Racing Queensland News. Buffering, a five-times Queensland Horse Of The Year, will jump from barrier two in the 1200 metre feature. "He's drawn favourably which is his biggest advantage," Heathcote said. "He should easily find the fence from the barrier without having to do too much work." Heathcote concedes he may have been too easy on Buffering when he resumed with a fading fifth in the Gr1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on 30 September. "I felt he was a little underdone going into the Moir which was partly my fault," Heathcote said. Buffering (Mossman-Action Annie, by Anabaa) won the Manikato three years ago and if successful again will join Dual Choice (1970-71), Tauto (1973-74), Manikato (1979-1982), Spinning Hill (2002-2003) and Spark Of Life (2004-2005) as two-time winners of the race. "He's lining up for his 35th Group 1 start which is an Australian record for the most number of Group 1 starts," Heathcote said. "He's won seven of them and has placed in a lot of others which is quite an achievement."
