Rebel Dane Wins Gr1 Manikato Stakes

Monday, 24th October 2016

At Moonee Valley in Melbourne on Friday night, Baerami Thoroughbreds stallion California Dane (Danehill-Storminwinter, by Seattle Slew) celebrated an elite success when 7YO entire Rebel Dane (California Dane-Texarcana, by More Than Ready) scored by 0.2 length for trainer Gary Portelli in the $1 million Gr1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 5YO gelding Fell Swoop (Not a Single Doubt-Touched in Flight, by Fasliyev) & 4YO gelding Japonisme (Choisir-Haiku, by Encosta de Lago). This was the second top flight victory for Rebel Dane who improved his record to 8 wins (including the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, Gr2 Shorts, Gr2 Royal Sovereign Stakes & Gr3 Show County Handicap) & 9 placings (the Gr1 Moir Stakes, Gr2 Warwick Stakes, Gr2 Missile Stakes & Gr2 Hobartville Stakes) from 36 starts for $2,408,600 earnings. "He's been unlucky a couple of times [at Gr1 level]. We always thought this wasn't his track, but it was tonight," trainer Gary Portelli said. "He's a seven-year-old stallion but I knew he had it in him." He added" His last start at Randwick he ran 32.8 seconds his last 600 metres and I said we have to have a go at this race. And here we are in the winner's circle." Rebel Dane will now head to the spelling paddock.
