Champion mare Winx will miss next week's Gr1 Emirates Stakes (formerly Mackinnon Stakes) at Flemington with trainer Chris Waller confirming the dual Cox Plate winner will be sent for a well deserved spell. Waller said on Saturday that he would love to return next year with Winx to try and emulate the legendary Kingston Town who remains the only horse in history to win three Cox Plates. "The owners and I have jointly decided to spell Winx following her brilliant win in the Cox Plate on Saturday," Waller said yesterday in a statement. "Serious consideration was given to running in the Mackinnon Stakes in two weeks, however we have carefully deliberated on what is best for the horse as well as ensuring she spends a reasonable period in the spelling paddock." He added: "At this stage targets in the autumn are yet to be discussed, but the most logical races will make up her autumn campaign. Other options such as travelling overseas and returning for a third Cox Plate in 2017 are also items the owners and I will discuss in the near future. Longevity is the key for this mare as it will provide many more special moments over the next 12 months and beyond."
