Thompson Happy With Harkwood

Wednesday, 26th October 2016

Trainer John Thompson says Irish-bred stayer Sir John Harkwood (Sir Percy-Athene, by Rousillon) is in good order ahead of next Tuesday's $6 million Gr1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington. Raced by Paul Fudge's Waratah Thoroughbreds, Sir John Harkwood scored a strong win in the Gr1 Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick before finishing a disappointing tenth (beaten 7 lengths) behind star mare Jameka in the Caulfield Cup last start. "He's come through the run really well," Thompson told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. "Obviously we were a little bit disappointed with that run. But if you look at his previous Caulfield form it's pretty ordinary and he didn't have much luck in the run." He added: "He spent a week at Waratah Farm and came back full of life. He had a nice gallop on the course proper [at Flemington] this morning and surprisingly ran slick time." Thompson - who will be saddling up his first Melbourne Cup runner after many years working for the late Cups King Bart Cummings - says the two miles of the Melbourne Cup is the only question mark hanging over Sir John Harkwood next Tuesday. "The 3200 metres is a worry because he has never raced over that distance before, but I have no hesitation in saying that Flemington will suit him better and he should run better than he did in the Caulfield Cup," he said. "The plan has been to peak him on the day so hopefully we can pull it off."
