Swear To Stay Derby Trip

Thursday, 27th October 2016

The connections of lightly raced colt Swear are optimistic about him running out a strong 2500 metres in Saturday's $1.5 million Gr1 Victoria Derby at Flemington, reports ANZ Bloodstock News. Trained by Team Hawkes on behalf of B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Australia, Swear (Redoute's Choice-Crossyourheart, by Show a Heart), a $725,000 Easter yearling purchase, is coming off an excellent second behind Yankee Rose in the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick. Garry Cuddy, general manager at Spendthrift Australia, believes the step up in distance will not pose any problems for the talented colt. “He’s shown already that he is a horse who is going to progress and should run the trip, although he still has to go out there and do it,” Cuddy said. “You never know until you try, but whatever happens he won’t go down without a fight. As we saw the other day, once Yankee Rose and Prized Icon went past him, he fought back and in the end he caught Prized Icon for second in the last 50 metres." He added: "We’re confident we’ve got a horse who will run the trip, but we’ve just got to wait and see.” Swear will be ridden by Tommy Berry and has drawn midfield in barrier ten.
