Astern The Best: O'Shea

Friday, 28th October 2016

John O'Shea has paid Astern a huge compliment labelling him the best horse he has ever trained. O'Shea, who previously trained multiple Gr1 winners such as Private Steer and Racing To Win prior to accepting the role as head trainer for Godolphin in Australia, was talking up the Golden Rose winner as he prepares to take on a star-studded field in tomorrow's Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington. "I think he's the best I've trained," O'Shea told AAP. Speaking to Godolphin.com, O'Shea said the son of Medaglia d'Oro was primed for a bold showing in the $500,000 stallion-making feature. "I can't fault him, he's settled in well and trialled very nicely since coming to Melbourne," O'Shea said. "I'm really bullish about him." He added: "I think he's drawn beautifully [barrier 8], there's plenty of speed around him, he should get good cover straight away." Jockey James McDonald shares O'Shea's lofty opinion of the colt. "I get goosebumps talking about him," McDonald said. "We're taking on a very good line-up of three-year-olds and he's going to have to be very good to beat them, but I think he's a very good horse."
