Price Hopeful With Rocketeer

Friday, 28th October 2016

Meanwhile, Mick Price has his fingers crossed that talented 3YO Rocketeer (Smart Missile-Some Girls Do, by More Than Ready) possesses the requisite stamina to stay the 2500 metres of tomorrow's Gr1 Victoria Derby at Flemington. Rocketeer, who will be ridden by Mark Zahra, is coming off an excellent Derby trial when a fast-finishing second to Good Standing in the Gr3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield two weeks ago. But Price still has his doubts. "I have a little niggle in the back of mind that says maybe [he will run out a strong 2500 metres]...But I don't know is the true answer," Price told Melbourne's Radio Sport National. "But he's had a really good preparation, he's had a good grounding and his 2000 metre run the other day...he had a good strong dash to the line." Price also lamented Rocketeer's awkward draw. "Drawn 15 out of 16, it's going to be pretty tough from that barrier...my first thought was to just look after him for the majority of the race and see what he can do late," he said. Race favourite Sacred Elixir is clearly the horse to beat, according to Price. "He seems to be the horse who has come good at the right time, with the right pedigree and preparation," Price said. "He is a deserved favourite. It's an open race outside of him [Sacred Elixir]."
