I Am A Star Wins Gr1 Myer Classic
At Flemington in Melbourne, Yarraman Park's Gr3-winning stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit-Cannarelle, by Canny Lad) celebrated an elite success when 3YO filly I Am A Star (I Am Invincible-Star Band, by Dixieland Band) scored by 0.4 length for trainer Shane Nichols in the $500,000 Gr1 Myer Classic (1600m) for 3YO+ fillies & mares, over 5YO mare French Emotion (Snitzel-Love and Emotion, by Woodman) & 4YO mare Denmagic (Denman-Magic Zefta, by Viscount). The well bred I Am A Star, who became the first filly in history to win the Myer, advanced her record to 4 wins (including the Gr3 Quezette Stakes, Gr3 SAJC National Stakes) and 2 placings (including the Gr1 MRC Thousand Guineas) from 9 starts for $636,450 earnings. Originally purchased for NZ$12,000 at the 2014 NZB Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, I Am A Star was then sold for $40,000 to James Harron Bloodstock at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the draft of Broadwater Thoroughbreds. I Am A Star also gave her trainer Shane Nichols his first Gr1 winner. "It's an enormous buzz, I'm not sure I can explain the feeling," Nichols told racing.com. "To train your first Group One winner at Flemington during the carnival on Derby Day is something that you dream of." From the unraced US bred mare Star Band (Dixieland Band), I Am A Star is a direct descendant of celebrated blue hen Fanfreluche, ancestress of Gr1 winners and star Australian sires Flying Spur and Encosta de Lago.
