Prized Icon Wins Gr1 Victoria Derby

Monday, 31st October 2016

At Flemington in Melbourne, high profile Vinery Stud shuttler More Than Ready (Southern Halo-Woodman's Girl, by Woodman) celebrated an elite success when 3YO colt Prized Icon (More Than Ready-Tropical Affair, by Danehill) scored by 2-lengths for trainer James Cummings in the $1.5 million Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m) for 3YOs, over 3YO gelding Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi-Baltika, by Stravinsky) & fellow 3YO colt Inference (So You Think-Pontiana, by Redoute's Choice). Prized Icon, retained to race by his breeder Gooree Stud when passed in for $250,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, improved his record to 3 wins (including the Gr1 Champagne Stakes & Fernhill Stakes) & 7 placings (including the ATC Spring Champion Stakes, Gr3 ATC Schweppervesence Handicap, Listed Lonhro Plate & Gr3 Black Opal Stakes) from 13 starts for $1,494,100 earnings. Prized Icon's dominant victory saw young James Cummings became the latest member of the Cummings racing dynasty to train a Victoria Derby winner, joining his great grandfather Jim (Comic Court, 1948), grandfather Bart (Dayana and Omnicorp in 1972 & 1987 respectively), and father Anthony (Fiveandahalfstar in 2012) as winners of the blue riband classic. "It is obviously fantastic to win a race that my family has been involved with for so long and this horse really deserves it," James Cummings told racing.com. From the stakes winning Danehill mare Tropical Affair, Prized Icon is a full-brother to Gr3 Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Romantic Moon and a half-brother to Gr3 Inglis Mile winner Matras (Zabeel).
