Pilote D'Essai Wins Listed Pakenham Cup
At Pakenham in Victoria, 5YO UK-bred gelding Pilote D'Essai (Oasis Dream-Plante Rare, by Giant's Causeway) made it successive black-type victories when scoring a dominant 2.25 length win for trainers David & Ben Hayes & Tom Dabernig in the $200,000 Listed Pakenham Cup (2500m) for 3YO+, over 6YO entire Puccini (Encosta de Lago-Miss Opera, by Paris Opera) & 7YO Irish-bred gelding Little White Cloud (Dalakhani-Quest for Eternity, by Sadler's Wells). Pilote D'Essai, who was a £230,000 purchase by Astute Bloodstock at the 2015 Tattersalls Autumn Horse in Training Sale, improved his record to 6 wins (including the Listed Ballarat Cup) and 4 placings from 14 starts for $473,262 earnings. David Hayes said Pilote D'Essai would be aimed at some of the feature races in the autumn. "I think he will be a very reliable horse at 2000 metres and beyond, probably we were running him a little short in the spring...hindsight is a wonderful thing," Hayes told racing.com. "We will just give him a month in the paddock now and we'll set him for a nice race in the autumn like the Australian Cup or the Peter Young [Gr2 Peter Young Stakes]."
