Connections Have Faith In Colt's Staying Potential

Wednesday, 14th December 2016

The trainers of Cha Siu Bao have high hopes that the smart 3YO can outrun his pedigree, reports NZ Racing Desk. He is being aimed at the $1 million Gr1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on 4 March. "Everything he does has indicated to us that his tendency is to stay so we're cracking on with him toward the longer distances," said Andrew Scott, who prepares the colt at Matamata with Lance O'Sullivan. By Arrowfield Stud's Gr2-winning juvenile Smart Missile, Cha Siu Bao is out of the classy Stravinsky mare Ballet Society. A half-sister to Gr1 Kelt Capital Stakes (2000m) winner Cent Home, Ballet Society was a dual Gr2 winner of the Angus Armanasco Stakes & Kewney Stakes (both run over a mile), as well as Gr1-placed behind champion filly Alinghi in the Thousand Guineas in Melbourne. A winner of 2 of his 6 starts, Cha Siu Bao was last seen finishing a brave fourth in the Gr1 NZ 2000 Guineas on 5 November. "That was a really good performance from him and he enjoyed a nice break after that," Scott said. "He's doing well and, at this stage, we're hoping to run him at Ellerslie on New Year's Day in the Great Northern Guineas and then press on."
