Merlene Son Set For Debut

Wednesday, 14th December 2016

Beautifully bred colt Gothenburg is set to make his debut for trainer Gerald Ryan in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1400m) at Warwick Farm today. By the ill-fated High Chaparral, Gothenburg is out of brilliant Gr1 Golden Slipper winner Merlene (Danehill-Bold Promise, by Luskin Star) and is a half-brother to Gr2 South African Fillies Nursery winner and Gr1 placegetter Merlene de Lago (Encosta de Lago). Merlene de Lago, in turn, is the dam of the ill-fated but brilliant juvenile Burnstone. Described by his trainer Robbie Griffiths as potentially the best horse he ever trained, Burnstone collapsed and died of a heart attack during trackwork following his stunning debut win in the 2015 Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m). A $550,000 purchase at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Segenhoe Stud, Gothenburg is owned by a syndicate headed by former media identity David Raphael and Damion Flower of Jadeskye Racing. Gothenburg will be ridden by Blake Shinn and has drawn barrier one.
