TJ Smith Target For Rebel Dane

Wednesday, 14th December 2016

Rebel Dane (California Dane-Texarcana, by More Than Ready) will be set for the $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on 1 April having pulled up from Sunday's Hong Kong Sprint in good order, reports racingnsw.com.au. Having won the Gr1 Manikato Stakes at his most Australian recent outing, trainer Gary Portelli was optimistic about the 7YOs prospects in the international feature but it was not to be with Rebel Dane finishing a disappointing 11th behind Aerovelocity. “I had a premonition that the gate was going to be a problem,” Portelli said. “When the gates opened the speed map went out the window. All of the horses inside us didn’t jump well, there was no pace early and we were stuck wide. He had no option but to go forward. But when he did get his spot that’s when the pressure really came on, and we were going a long way from home." He added: "It was a good experience...He is eating his head off. He is fine." Rebel Dane will fly out of Hong Kong on Christmas night and after spending a further 14 days in quarantine in Melbourne, will return to his Warwick Farm base. "We want to have him ready first-up for the TJ Smith, and are hoping to get a stallion deal done in the meantime," Portelli said.
