Xtravagant On Target For Trentham

Wednesday, 14th December 2016

Dual Gr1 winner Xtravagant (Pentire-Axiom, by Zabeel) gave his trainers a pleasant surprise at the Te Aroha trials yesterday, reports NZ Racing Desk. The 4YO, who is being set for a first-up tilt at the Gr1 Telegraph at Trentham on 21 January, won his 1000 metre trial in the hands of Matt Cameron. "We didn't think he'd be winning it because we haven't done a lot with him," said Stephen Autridge, who prepares Xtravagant with Jamie Richards. "We're really happy. He's only half-fit and it was a right-handed trial. He'll have another trial left-handed and then go to Wellington." He added: "He was here for education. We've just got to put Australia behind us and forget about it because he's shown us he's coming along as well as ever today." Xtravagant, a stunning 8 length winner of the Gr1 NZ 2000 Guineas and Gr1 Waikato Sprint as a 3YO, was a shadow of his former self in his two Australian starts last spring, finishing towards the rear in both the Gr2 Bobbie Lewis Quality and the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in Melbourne.
