Vandyke Throws 3YO In The Deep End
Such is the opinion that David Vandyke has of unraced 3YO Deep Image that he is willing to test him against boom colt Winning Rupert in tomorrow's Listed Gold Edition Stakes (1200m) at Doomben. The Bjorn Baker-trained Winning Rupert is unbeaten in three outings, including a brilliant 6 length romp in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Plate (1200m) at Eagle Farm two weeks ago, whereas Deep Image's career hitherto has been restricted to a lone barrier trial. But what a trial it was, with the son of Vinery stallion Testa Rossa cruising to a 4.5 length win over 850 metres at the Sunshine Coast. "He goes very well. I've got a strong opinion of him and I wouldn't be running him in a race like this if I didn't think he could be competitive," Vandyke told racing.com. Vandyke said Deep Image's performance will determine if he targets the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas on 14 January, or lowers his expectations by running in the $250,000 maiden instead. "If he runs top four and gets beaten then we can go the rich maiden or if he tests Winning Rupert and suggests he would be competitive in the Guineas then that is an option for us as well," he said. A $150,000 purchase by Vandyke at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale form the draft of Vinery, Deep Image is out of the unraced Redoute's Choice mare Starwish, a daughter of Gr1 winner Stella Cadente. This is the successful Eau D'Etoile family of dual Gr1 winner Filante, Golden Slipper winner Bint Marscay, Australian Guineas winner Kenny's Best Pal, Gr1 Coolmore Classic winner Bollinger, and Victoria Derby winner Benicio.
