Chrome Romps Home In Winter Challenge Stakes
California Chrome set a new track record of 1:40.03 when cruising to an easy 12 length win in the Winter Challenge Stakes (8.5 furlongs) at Los Alamitos racecourse in the US on Saturday, reports Blood Horse. “He felt strong - super strong today," jockey Victor Espinoza said. "I know the competition wasn’t that great, but for me, the most important thing was how he felt physically." The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes & Dubai World Cup winner is now likely to have his final race start in the inaugural running of the US$12 million Gr1 Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on 28 January, where he will once again clash with rising star Arrogate. Arrogate shot to the top of the World's Best Racehorse Rankings following his thrilling win over California Chrome in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Classic in November. Sherman says he is looking forward to the contest. “I’m ready. I’m going to be chomping at the bit," Sherman said. "I think you’re going to see a hell of a race. I really do.” California Chrome has now won 16 of his 26 starts for US$14,496,218 in earnings, making him the richest North American racehorse of all time ahead of 2008 Dubai World Cup winner Curlin with US$10,501,80.
