Sense Of Occasion Wins Gr2 Villiers Stakes
At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Darley's 2006 Champion 2YO Colt & 2007 Gr1 Kentucky Derby-winning shuttler Street Sense (Street Cry-Bedazzle, by Dixieland Band) added a Group success when 6YO gelding Sense Of Occasion (Street Sense-Saywaan, by Zabeel) scored an upset 0.2 length for trainer Kris Lees in the $250,000 Gr2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) for 3YO+, over 7YO Irish-bred gelding Dibayani (Shamardal-Dibiya, by Caerleon) & 5YO UK-bred entire Sarrasin (Monsun-Sand River, by High Chaparral). Sense Of Occasion improved his record to 7 wins (including the Listed Premier's Cup & Listed McKell Cup) and 6 placings (including the Listed ATC Lord Mayor's Cup) from 29 starts for $538,520 earnings. Sense Of Occasion was purchased by Beamish Bloodstock for $80,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud. Trainer Kris Lees said Sense Of Occasion may now head north to Queensland to chase the $100,000 bonus on offer for any horse that can win the Villiers Stakes and Listed Bernborough Quality (1600m) at Eagle Farm on 31 December. "If the horse pulls up well, we will definitely have to give plenty of thought about going to Brisbane and then coming back for the Gosford Cup," Lees told AAP. "The fact the Bernborough will be run at Eagle Farm this year rather than the tighter Doomben circuit would be an advantage from our point of view."
