William Longsword Wins Gr1 Cape Guineas

Monday, 19th December 2016

At Kenilworth in South Africa, well bred 3YO colt William Longsword (Captain Al-Pagan Princess, by Fort Wood) sent his value soaring after scoring a strong 0.5 length win for trainer Vaughan Marshall in the R1 million Gr1 Cape Guineas (1600m) for 3YOs, over fellow 3YO colts Gold Standard (Trippi-Olympic Dam, by Al Mufti) & Australian-bred 3YO colt Table Bay (Redoute's Choice-Gabriella, by Cape Cross). Racing in the familiar green, black and yellow stars of Marcus Jooste's Mayfair Speculators, William Longsword improved his record to 5 wins and 1 placing from 7 starts. A R2.2 million purchase at the 2015 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, William Longsword is a half-brother to Gr1 South African Fillies Sprint winner Real Princess (Trippi). In winning the Cape Guineas, William Longsword emulated his champion sire Captain Al (also trained by Marshall), who won the same race back in 2000. He is the 14th Gr1 winner for Captain Al, who has headed South Africa's 2YO sires list for the past eight years running.
