Esteban Set For Return

Wednesday, 21st December 2016

Exciting stayer Esteban has been nominated for a benchmark 85 handicap (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Trained by Kiwi ex-pat John Sargent, Esteban (Encosta de Lago-Nadege, by Giant's Causeway) looked a high-class stayer in the making when stringing together four consecutive victories in the winter which yielded a combined winning margin of 25.9 lengths. Sargent has previously mentioned the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups as potential long-term targets for the lightly raced 4YO. Raced by a syndicate headed by Segenhoe Stud, the New Zealand-bred Esteban is out of the stakes-winning Giant's Causeway mare Nadege, a daughter of 1998 Champion New Zealand mare and Melbourne Cup runner-up Champagne (Zabeel). This is also the family of Champagne's New Zealand Derby winning brother St Reims, Gr3 winners Full Of Spirit (Flying Spur) and Lady Cumquat (Duke Of Marmalade), and US Gr1 winners Delta, Dike, Levee and Bayou.
