Ellis Secures Golden Slipper Prospect For $625K
Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis expressed his delight at securing what he believed was the "colt of the sale" for $625,000 at yesterday's second session of the NZ Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka. The yearling in question was Lot 312, the handsome Exceed And Excel colt from New Zealand 1000 Guineas runner-up Oasis Rose who was consigned by Karaka legend Sir Patrick Hogan through his Cambridge Stud draft. Ellis, who admitted that he had inspected the colt well in excess of his normal average, described him as the archetypal Golden Slipper horse. "I first saw this colt as a foal at Cambridge Stud," Ellis told NZ Racing Desk. "Since then I've probably had the opportunity to see him at least another ten times before he went into the ring today. He has impressed me all the way through, particularly with the way he has thrived in the environment here at the sales complex. He has a wonderful temperament that is just one of his many admirable attributes." Ellis added: "I've always had a dream to win the Golden Slipper and it is this type of colt that I think is well suited to a task like that."
