Winx Third In Trial

Wednesday, 1st February 2017

Champion mare Winx (Street Cry-Vegas Showgirl, by Al Akbar) has finished third in a Rosehill barrier trial in what will be her final trial hit-out before she resumes in the Gr2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday week. The 10-time Gr1 winner, who hasn't raced since her stunning and record-breaking 8 length win in the Cox Plate in October, finished third behind the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Nancy and stable-mate Sacred Master in the opening 1000 metre heat of the morning. "We were very happy with her trial," Waller told Racing NSW. "It was very similar to her first trial, it's the start of a long preparation and an important preparation to defend her crown as the world's best horse on turf." Waller added: "She was just there to stretch the legs, get the lungs moving. It's a very warm day in Sydney today and we are mindful to not overtax any horse let alone Winx. So she just went through the motions, settled back early to ensure she got into a nice position and comfortable getting her breathing right." Waller has mapped out a 4-race programme for Winx in Sydney where she will campaign for the duration of the autumn carnival. "She will be first-up in the Apollo Stakes and then two weeks into the Chipping Norton [Gr1], three weeks to the George Ryder [Gr1] and three weeks to the Queen Elizabeth [Gr1]," he said. "She's a horse at the peak of her career and as a result she can't improve. She's just got to hold her own and we've got to hope there is no budding champion on the way through to take the crown off her head." Click here to watch Winx's trial.
