Veranillo Wins Listed Lonhro Plate

Monday, 6th February 2017

At Randwick in Sydney, Darley's multiple Gr1-winning shuttler Medagliad'Oro (El Prado-Cappucino Bay, by Bailjumper) added a black-type success when undefeated juvenile colt Veranillo (Medaglia D'Oro-Shelters, by Lonhro) scored by 1.5-length for trainer John O'Shea in the $125,000 Listed Lonhro Plate (1100m) for 2YOs, over the filly Exceeds (Snitzel-Exceedingly Happy, by Exceed And Excel) and fellow colt Eden Roc (Star Witness-Hilton Head, by Fastnet Rock). Veranillo, a home-bred for Godolphin, took his record 2 wins from 2 starts for $145,175 earnings. Trainer John O'Shea confirmed Veranillo would now head to the $3.5 million Gr1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on 18 March. "He is an unassuming little fella with plenty of improvement. I think when he gets a little bit of head gear he'll be even better. He's learning his trade while he is winning which is really nice," trainer John O'Shea said. "That'll probably get him in now in terms of prize money. We can just smoke our pipe now...at some stage we'll put the blinkers on in the lead up to the Slipper and see if it can find us a bit more."
