Winx Draws Three In Apollo

Thursday, 9th February 2017

Champion mare Winx will jump from barrier 3 in a capacity field of 14 when she opens her autumn campaign in Saturday's Gr2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick. The eyes of the racing world will be fixed on the 10-time Gr1 winner, who hasn't raced since her stunning and record-breaking 8 length win in the Cox Plate in October. Winx galloped over 1000 metres on Tuesday morning in preparation for her first-up assignment with regular jockey Hugh Bowman on board. "She galloped in company with Preferment and had the edge over him in the concluding stages and we thought both horses worked very well," a statement from the Chris Waller stable read. "Hugh and Chris are both happy with where she is at this preparation and her fitness ahead of her first-up run this Saturday in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick." Winx will do a final piece of work early Thursday morning. Dual Gr1-winning filly Global Glamour is a dual acceptor with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable telling media earlier in the week that the Gr2 Light Finger Stakes is the preferred option.
