Burning Front Wins Gr3 TS Carlyon Cup
At Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne, Gr3-winning & triple Gr1-placed stallion Primus (Flying Spur-Copa de Oro, by Hector Protector) added a Group success when 6YO chestnut gelding Burning Front (Primus-She's a Knockout, by Kingston Rule) led throughout for a 0.3 length win for trainer Darren Weir in the $150,000 Gr3 TS Carlyon Cup (1600m) for 4YO+, over 4YO New Zealand-bred gelding and stable-mate Humidor (Teofilo-Zalika, by Zabeel) & 4YO Godolphin gelding Tally (Street Cry-Itemise, by Kris S). This was back-to-back Carlyon Cup victories for the ultra-consistent Burning Front who improved his record to 14 wins (including the Gr3 TS Carlyon Cup) and 18 placings (including the Gr3 VRC TAB Rewards Stakes & Gr3 MRC Sandown Stakes) from 43 starts for $816,960 earnings. "He's got a great racing style making his own luck up on the speed," Weir told racing.com. Meanwhile, Damian Lane, rider of runner-up and stable-mate of the winner, Humidor, who flashed home from last on the turn, lamented the latter's waywardness in the straight. "If he goes straight he wins," Lane said. Humidor will have his next start in the Gr2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on Blue Diamond day (25 February).
