Le Romain Wins Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes
At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & 2007 Gr1 Kentucky Derby runner-up Hard Spun (Danzig-Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) added a Group success when 4YO gelding Le Romain (Hard Spun-Mignard, by Strategic) scored a first-up 0.1 length for trainer Kris Lees in the $150,000 Gr3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) for 3YO+, over 6YO geldings Big Money (Choisir-Lyn's Money, by Humam) & Snippets Land (Snippetson-Seduction Line, by Testa Rossa). This was an excellent return to racing by Le Romain who was lumping a huge 61kg and having his first run since winning the Gr1 Cantala Stakes in Melbourne during the spring. He improved his record to 5 wins (including the Gr1 Cantala Stakes & Gr1 Randwick Guineas) and 7 placings (including the Gr2 Tramway Stakes & Gr2 ATC Hobartville Stakes) from 14 starts for $1,591,075 earnings. Trainer Kris Lees said Le Romain will have his next start in the Gr1 Canterbury Stakes before a likely meeting with Winx in the Gr1 Chipping Norton and then the Gr1 Doncaster Mile. "He's just a really good horse," Lees said. "He's possibly still a touch underrated but I doubt that's going to be the case by the end of the autumn."
