Anaheim Derby Bound

Wednesday, 15th February 2017

Promising colt Anaheim will commence his Australian Derby campaign when he resumes in the the Le Pine Funeral Handicap (1400m) at Sandown today. Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young are hoping Anaheim can deliver the stable successive Derby victories after Tavago landed the blue-riband classic at Randwick last year. "That's the main aim at this stage," Busuttin told AAP. "He's probably the stable's pick to be running in a Derby at this stage." Anaheim, a son of Fastnet Rock and the Zabeel mare Asmahan, gave a glimpse of his staying potential when winning the Listed TCL Stakes over 1800 metres at Flemington on Oaks day in the spring. "We're pleased with the way he's going," Busuttin said. "He holds a nomination for the Australian Guineas. While he's obviously got to improve a great deal, if he happened to run in the first three tomorrow we'd look at that."
