Filly From Best in Show Family Wins Debut
Well bred filly Villa Carlotta lived up to her trainer's lofty estimation of her talent when posting a stylish 0.8 length debut win in the ATC Staff Recognition Day Handicap (1000m) at Royal Randwick yesterday. Trainer James Cummings said it was no surprise to see Villa Carlotta win at the first time of asking, as she has always displayed well above average ability. "She's a beautiful filly, a class act," Cummings told Sky Racing. "I know it's only a provincial class race but I dare say that this will be a pretty strong form race and the way she ambled up three wide around the bend with that big striding action…I think there was plenty of style about her win and I'm really looking forward to seeing what she can do in the next few starts." Cummings added: "She's coming good at the right time. She's nominated for some good races…but she certainly has plenty of quality to be considering those types of races." Cummings nominated the Gr2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 4 March as a suitable target. Retained to race by her breeder John Camilleri of Fairway Thoroughbreds, Villa Carlotta is the second foal to race from the talented and beautifully bred mare Florentina (Redoute's Choice-Celebria, by Peintre Celebre), a winner of the 2012 Gr3 Gold Coast Guineas and twice placed at Gr2 level in the Furious Stakes and Tea Rose Stakes behind top filly Streama. This makes Villa Carlotta a direct descendant of celebrated blue hen Best in Show. This is arguably the most sought after bloodline in the world, with other esteemed members including multiple champion Australian sire Redoute's Choice, Hurricane Sky, Umatilla, Xaar, Al Maher, Sex Appeal (dam of stallion heavyweights Try My Best & El Gran Senor), Kentucky Oaks winner Blush With Pride, and her daughter Better Than Honour, who fetched a world-record price of US$14 million for a broodmare in 2008 and is the dam of US classic winners Rags To Riches & Jazil.
