Monday, 20th February 2017

At Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne on Friday night, Coolmore Stud stallion and former Australian Champion Racehorse So You Think (High Chaparral-Triassic, by Tights) added a black-type success when 3YO gelding Northwest Passage (So You Think-Danevade, by Danehill) fought back strongly to score by 0.75 lenhth for trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott in the $150,000 Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) for 3YO+, over 7YO Irish-bred gelding Chance To Dance (Teofilo-Crystal Ballet, by Royal Academy) & 5YO gelding Dandy Gent (Savoire Vivre-Gehenna, by Ladoni). Passed in for $140,000 at the 2015 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Newgate Farm, Northwest Passage advanced his record to 5 wins (including the Listed Tasmanian Derby & Listed Hobart Guineas) and 1 placing from 6 starts for $269,000 earnings. Roger Elliot, stable foreman for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, said Northwest Passage would now return to Sydney to be prepared for the $2 million Gr1 Australian Derby (2400m) at Royal Randwick on 1 April. "He's just keeps improving," Elliot told Racing.com. "He'll go home now for the Derby and its all looking good for him." Jockey Katelyn Mallyon commented: "He switched off lovely and gave me such a beautiful feel...He's a brilliant stayer," she said. The well bred Northwest Passage is out of the Gr2-placed mare Danevade, a full-sister to multiple Group winner Shania Dane and champion Hong Kong sprinter Scintillation.
