Hong Kong Option for Jameka

Wednesday, 22nd February 2017

Ciaron Maher has nominated the Gr1 QEII Cup in Hong Kong as another potential overseas target for star mare Jameka later in the year, reports AAP. Maher recently revealed that he is contemplating an international campaign for last season's Caulfield Cup winner once her autumn preparation comes to a close in the Gr1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on 11 March. Races such as the Gr1 King George And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Ascot, and even Europe's most prestigious race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, have been discussed. Maher said Jameka could run in the QEII Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin on 30 April before travelling to England. Jameka kicked off her Australian autumn campaign with a slashing fourth in the Gr1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield, when running home strongly from the rear of the field. "I was rapt with that," Maher said. "I was expecting her to run well. She was quite bright and well, and she had trialled well and very forward. Her work leading in showed that." Jameka headlines 16 nominations for Saturday's Gr2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) which is a traditional lead-up to the Australian Cup. "She's in great order," Maher said. "She had a nice gallop this morning [Tuesday] and seemed to pull up well."
