Pateena Arena Wins Listed Gold Sovereign

Thursday, 23rd February 2017

At Launceston in Tasmania yesterday, Armidale Stud's Gr3-winning stallion Needs Further (Encosta de Lago-Crowned Glory, by Danehill) added a black-type success when 2YO filly Pateena Arena (Needs Further-Gehenna, by Ladoni) scored by 1.5 lengths for trainer Bill Ryan in the $100,000 Listed Gold Sovereign (1200m) for 2YOs, over fellow filly Peristrophe (Your Song-Glogirl, by General Nediym) & 2YO gelding Geegee Rock'n'run (Wordsmith-Pretty Jessica, by Favorite Trick). Pateena Arena, who was purchased for $22,000 by her trainer Bill Ryan at the 2016 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale from the draft of Armidale Stud, improved her record to 3 wins (including the Listed Elwick Stakes) and 1 placing from 5 starts for $136,025 earnings. "She's a little cracker," Ryan told Sky Racing. "I bought her to be a three-year-old so this is just a bonus. She's just kept on improving ever since I put a saddle on her." He added: "She will go to the paddock for a good rest and hopefully return and clean up the three-year-old fillies races next year."
