Sydney Cup Goal for Tavago

Thursday, 23rd February 2017

New Zealand-bred stayer Tavago will take his first step toward an autumn distance feature when he takes on Winx in Saturday's Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, reports NZ Racing Desk. A winner of last season's Australian Derby, the 4YO Tavistock gelding failed to fire in two runs in the spring, finishing well down the track in the Gr2 Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes and Gr1 Underwood Stakes in Melbourne. "He got a virus in the spring, but he's good now," said Trent Busuttin, who prepares Tavago at Cranbourne with Natalie Young. "He's more mature and heavier now and finally able to hold his condition." Tavago's primary autumn target is the $2 million Gr1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on 8 April.
