Gold Fever Wins Gr2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes
At Matamata in New Zealand, Waikato Stud's Cox Plate winning stallion Savabeel (Zabeel-Savannah Success, by Success Express) added a Group success when 2YO filly Gold Fever (Savabeel-Gold Rocks, by Oratorio) scored by a head for trainers Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards in the $100,000 Gr2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes (1200m) for 2YO fillies, over fellow fillies Joyfilly (Highly Recommended-When the Cats Away, by Felix the Cat) & Santuzza (Savabeel-Star of Gibraltar, by Danehill). A $110,000 purchase by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Sledmere Stud, Gold Fever emulated the feat of her half-sister Gold Rush (So You Think) who won last year's edition of the Matamata Breeders' Stakes. Both fillies are out of the Gr2 Karrakatta Plate winner Gold Rocks (Oratorio). Saturday's victory boosted Gold Fever's record to 3 wins and 2 placings (including the Gr3 ARC Eclipse Stakes) from 5 starts for NZ$94,275 earnings. Gold Fever will now head to the Gr1 Sistema Stakes at Ellerslie in two weeks time. "The Savabeels are really tough and she's a filly with attitude and come race day she's very hard to get past," co-trainer Jamie Richards told NZ Racing Desk. "She'll go to the Group One in a couple of weeks and she's run well at Ellerslie before."
