La Bella Diosa Wins Gr2 Surround Stakes
At Royal Randwick in Sydney, Coolmore Stud stallion and former Australian Champion Racehorse So You Think (High Chaparral-Triassic, by Tights) added a Group success when 3YO New Zealand-bred filly La Bella Diosa (So You Think-Star Affair, by Star Way) scored by 1.5 lengths for trainers Mandy & Matt Brown in the $200,000 Gr2 Surround Stakes (1400m) for 3YO fillies, over fellow fillies Omei Sword (High Chaparral-Irish Lights, by Fastnet Rock) & Global Glamour (Star Witness-Spectacula, by Testa Rossa). This was a most encouraging Australian debut for La Bella Diosa who, when campaigned as La Diosa, established herself as the best 3YO filly in New Zealand last season when winning the Gr1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton. La Bella Diosa improved her record to 5 wins (including the NZ 1000 Guineas, Listed John Griggs Stakes & Listed Canterbury Belle Stakes) and 1 placing from 7 starts for $357,733 earnings. La Bella Diosa primary autumn target is the $1 million Gr1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on 8 April. "She has always shown a lot. She won the Thousand Guineas pretty well. The owners wanted to have a bit of a go at the Australian Oaks so we've come over early. To get a result like this is just great," co-trainer Matt Brown told Sky Racing. By former Champion Australian Racehorse So You Think (High Chaparral-Triassic, by Tights), La Bella Diosa is out of Gr2 winning Star Way mare Star Affair and is a half sister to Gr3 AJC Summer Cup winner Solid Billing and dual Listed winner Thy. Star Affair, herself, is a daughter of The Grin and a granddaughter of The Dimple and consequently hails from the same family as NZ 1000 Guineas winner The Jewel and Gr1 Auckland Cup winner Irish Chance.
