Heys Not Happy With Spieth Weight
Trainer Bryce Heys has expressed his disappointment with the weight allocated to exciting sprinter Spieth (Thorn Park-Stella Livia, by Titus Livius) for Saturday week's Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington, reports racenet. Spieth will carry 55kg for the $1.25 million sprint feature, 3kg below the top weight Chautauqua, 1.5kg below Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes winner Terravista, and 0.5kg more than last year's Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback. Despite finishing runner-up at Gr1 level at his past two outings in the Darley Classic and Lightning Stakes, Heys thinks that for a horse that is yet to win a Group race, Spieth is too close in the weights to horses that boast better credentials. "I knew what I was in for," Heys said. "I'm not happy about it but I don't want to be seen as complaining or moaning." He added: "It's going to take a career peak performance to win a Newmarket in my opinion with those weights..."
