Bowman a Plus for Spieth

Tuesday, 7th March 2017

Trainer Bryce Heys says having champion jockey Hugh Bowman engaged to ride Spieth again in Saturday’s Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington could be the key to his winning prospects in the $1.25 million sprint feature. “The horse has never had any continuity in jockeys, and that’s no one’s fault, it’s just because I am a small trainer and it’s really hard to get [the top-class] jockeys. Spieth has proven himself now and having Hughie on again is a big plus,” Heys told ANZ Bloodstock News. Heys believes Spieth (Thorn Park-Stella Livia, by Titus Livius) is finally ready to deliver on his undoubted potential after recording Gr1 placings at his past two starts in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) on 18 February and Darley Classic (1200m) in the spring. “The aim was to try and win the Lightning and if we didn’t win the Lightning then we’d try and win the Newmarket. He’ll present very well on Saturday, for sure,” said Heys. “I think the horse is going to need to improve on what he has done before but it looks like he has…]He’s] had that nice grounding this time in for a hard-run 1200 metres…”
