Flying Artie to Miss Newmarket

Wednesday, 8th March 2017

Star colt Flying Artie has been withdrawn from Saturday's $1.25 million Gr1 Newmarket Handicap (1200) at Flemington due to illness. Flying Artie, who resumed with a luckless 7th placing (beaten 2.3 lengths) in the Gr1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) on 18 February, will now be aimed at the $2.5 million Gr1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on 1 April. "He worked at 6am and I was happy with his gallop but when I saw the horse at 9am we had an issue," trainer Mick Price told racing.com. "He was scoped and it was detected that he has a low-level lung infection. This requires treatment and three days rest in the paddock where he can get his head down on some green grass." Price added: "It is not ideal mid preparation and disappointing that we will miss the Newmarket but I'm still hopeful he can head to Sydney for the TJ Smith Stakes."
